Every three years you will come back in to renew your bus certification. We head out on the road and go down a list of things that you would normally do on an average bus route. Look at it like a refresher. If there is something that you don't normally do on your route, such as a railroad crossing, then we will walk you through it. We will also get you up to date on any new changes or rules. The transportation department will reach out to you when it is time for your renewal and get you scheduled.
You will need to keep your DOT Medical up-to-date as well. This is also something that the transportation department keeps track of and will reach out to get you scheduled. You will receive a letter in the mail, from the DMV, that gives a date that your DOT Medical will expire. If transportation department has not reached out to you to schedule, reach out to them and get that scheduled as soon as possible. You have to keep it current to drive a school bus. Once your DOT Medical expires you will receive another letter stating that you have 60 days to get it up-to-date. You can NOT drive a school bus past the expiration date of your DOT medical. If you fail to get it completed within the 60 days past your expiration, your actual license will be inactive and you will have to go back to a class C license. Then to get your CDL and bus license back you will have to go back through the Bus class and Behind The Wheel training again.
