If you live close to the state line and want to drive for the state that you do not live in, there are a couple of ways to achieve this.
The easiest way is to go through the state that you live in to get your CDL B license with P & S endorsements and then apply in the other state to drive. If you are hired you will only have to go through a short process to be eligible to drive. (See below)
Attend training with School Bus and Traffic Safety. (States have some different policies and laws pertaining to School Buses)
Do a simple driving test of some of the processes of driving the School Bus.
Finally you will be issued a pocket card to drive with the school system you are working for.
If you want to attend the class in the state that you are applying to work in you will need to follow the below process.
You will need to request a 5 year driving record from your local DMV to bring with you to class.
Attend 3 days of classes and pass all 4 tests. If you fail any of the tests you will be scheduled for a retest. Once you have passed all four tests, your scores will be entered into the federal training registry. This will satisfy the ELDT training required by FMCSA.
Go to the DMV in your licensed state and obtain a CDL permit. You will be required to take all four tests again in your state to satisfy the requirements to get your CDL permit.
Once you have obtained your CDL permit you will then let the transportation department, in the state you are training in, know. They will then put you on the list for the Behind the Wheel training. This will be 3 days of training in NC.
After your 3 days of training are complete, you will need to go back to the DMV, or state approved CDL School Bus trainer, in your state to do the driving test for your CDL license. Once you pass the driving test you will be able to obtain your CDL School Bus license.
Drivers will be required to provide a 5 year driving record every 6 months, by the end of June and December, to the state you are driving in. You will be notified to request the records so that they can be put in your file. If these files are not in your file you will not be able to drive a bus after those months until we have received the driving records.
Drivers will do a renewal with the state they are driving with every 3 years, again you will be notified ahead of time to get this scheduled.
Drivers will also need to keep their CDL license up to date in their home state.
