"I'm nervous!" A common phrase used by most drivers that come in on the first day of Behind The Wheel training and that is ok. The school bus is much bigger than the vehicles you normally drive. Determine on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being very nervous, how nervous you are. For example, if you start at an 8 I will work with you to get you down to a 4 by the end of day one. We will turn your fear into respect for the vehicle. Keep in mind that the bus is built to protect our students when on the road.
Continue below for the steps to getting your School Bus license.
Step 5
There are 3 parts to the behind the wheel training.
Pre-trip Inspection
Basic Control Skills
Road Trip
On day 1 we will start out with pre-trip inspection. We will spend time going over all the parts and procedures for properly checking out the vehicle before we drive it. Check the helpful links below for information to help you prepare before your first day. It is again a lot of information to remember, so it would be good to look through the information and familiarize your self with it.
After pre-trip inspection we will move into the Basic Control Skills training which will consist of three backing exercises. The three exercises are straight back, offset to the right and a 90 degree into an ally dock.
Once we have completed this I will take you guys out on a demo drive and show you some proper driving procedures, how to use your mirrors to navigate around the curbs, proper turns, etc. Once we get back to the garage I will then let you guys drive and get the feel of the on road experience. And yes, at some point we will stop for lunch.
On Day 2 we will go over the pre-trip again, practice the three backing exercises, and do some more driving. We will go over 4 other backing exercises, passenger stops, and roadside turn-arounds. And again we will stop for lunch at some point.
Day 3 is test day. We will be testing individually. Sadly we will not be doing lunch on test day.
Step 6
Once you have passed all three Behind The Wheel test, you will then be ready to go to the DMV to get your license. On the day that you pass your tests, your scores will be entered into the system and you will then be able to go to the DMV the next day to obtain your license.
